Deep-fried kara-age chicken has been a much-loved staple at convenience stores in Japan for decades. One of the longest-running varieties is Lawson's Kara-age Kun, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary.
To mark the occasion, the convenience store chain is producing a range of special flavors. The current limited-run offering, which is accented by yuzu-pon (Japanese citrus-flavoured soy sauce), will be tough to top.
Each large-sized pack (¥268) includes chicken pieces that are 40 percent bigger than the regular size of Kara-age Kun nuggets, but it's the pleasant citrus taste of yuzu that makes this new flavor stand out. It's a nice twist on a convenience store staple.
