Japan has a long history of gardening, but the culture truly blossomed during the peace and stability of the Edo Period (1603-1867). As summer kicks in, the Edo Tokyo Museum is showcasing Ukiyo-e prints, screens and guidebooks related to the art of gardening and floristry.

Tokyo: Which famous Japanese person would you most like to meet and why?
If I had a chance, I'd like to meet the ex-Blue Hearts singer Hiroto Komoto, who covered issues such as many people entering companies all wearing the same suit, all wanting to join big firms and wanting to buy the same-style house. I like him because he 'sang out' about these things.

Take to the sky this summer
In my childhood, I used to dream about floating through the sky like Mary Poppins, but to do that would likely involve a big umbrella in a typhoon, which is not as appealing. It looks like Midtown Loves Summer (MLS), however, offers a good chance to take to the sky.

Aquariums offer summer escape
This past Monday was Marine Day in Japan. Aside from creating a much-appreciated three-day weekend, the role of the holiday is to encourage people to reflect on the integral role the ocean plays in Japan's history. So, what better time to visit an aquarium? Japan has plenty of places to ogle fish, and...

Tokyo: Which of Japan's many summer firework displays do you recommend?
I think the best fireworks display in Japan is in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture. Even though it is not the biggest in Japan, the huge round fireworks let off there are very famous and attract people from all over the place. I'm looking forward to seeing the Nagaoka fireworks this year.
