Fernandez improving, but still not in Hanyu's class
World champion Javier Fernandez made history last week when he won his fourth consecutive European title in Bratislava. In accomplishing the feat the Spaniard became the first skater since Czechoslovakia's Ondrej Nepela in 1972 to capture the Euro crown four straight times.

Hanyu off to solid start with win at Autumn Classic
It was great to see Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu back on the ice last weekend for the Autumn Classic International in Barrie, Ontario. Hanyu won the event handily over a field of relatively unknown skaters.

Fukushima skating rink to reopen in anticipation of residents' return
A well-known skating rink in Kawamata, Fukushima Prefecture, that closed after the triple core meltdown at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant in 2011 will reopen in January, giving a shot in the arm to the disaster-stricken area.

Wakaba Higuchi is in third place following the short program at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships on Wednesday in Tallinn, Estonia. Higuchi received a score of 61.27 points and trails Russia's Evgenia Medvedeva (68.48) and Serafima Sakhanovich (63.09) heading into Friday's free skate.

Hanyu out after surgery
Olympic and world champion Yuzuru Hanyu will be hospitalized for two weeks and off the ice for one month following surgery for a bladder problem, the Japan Skating Federation announced on Tuesday.
