Shanshan could make landfall later Thursday while still a very strong storm, and its slow movement means it will deliver dangerous impacts over a prolonged period.
The Meteorological Agency forecasts that warm, moist air surrounding the typhoon will create unstable atmospheric conditions, leading to thunderstorms.

By Wednesday, the maximum wind speed is expected to reach up to 162 kilometers per hour around Amami Oshima island and southern Kyushu.
Typhoon Shanshan is the sixth typhoon to form in August, with the Meteorological Agency forecasting strong winds and potentially severe weather for a broad swath of the country from Tuesday as it approaches.
