Let regions of Ukraine vote
Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea and threat to Ukraine are causing damage he perhaps did not anticipate: U.S. disorientation, profound division in Europe and a real risk of war. Ukraine's regions should vote.

When will Netanyahu nail himself to the cross?
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is not wrong to believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will, sooner or later, have to stop nailing himself to small crosses (prisoner releases, minor settlement compromises) and move to the big cross: endangering his right-wing coalition to advance to final-status negotiations with the Palestinians.

Reality check for Mideast and U.S.
Israelis and Palestinians had better assess their dwindling options after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's latest Mideast peace efforts hit a wall, and acknowledge that a negotiated settlement is much better than their unilateral options.

Limiting emissions could hurt more than help
Arguments over global warming often have a moralistic or even religious cast. But a cold assessment of risks and how to ensure against them would doom the anti-carbon campaign.

Iraq near implosion as 'bad years' come back
Iraq's 'bad years' seem to be making a comeback, and this time the U.S. has little leverage over Iraq to control events from afar.

Kerry errs when he invokes specter of boycotts of Israel
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry cleverly addresses every worry articulated by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but Kerry's big mistake in his approach to negotiations is his need to publicly invoke, repeatedly, the specter of an international campaign to boycott Israel.

John Kerry: a 'magnificent' U.S. secretary of state
The indefatigable U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has been astoundingly discreet as a Mideast peace broker. Not a hint of what has been said in private has leaked into the public domain, yet there is almost no hope of a real peace deal.

Netanyahu's talks with Kerry will be critical
Support for an independent Palestine alongside the state of Israel is not a constant. An odd tension in public opinion exists on both sides: The desire for the two leaderships to negotiate a settlement is set against a much weaker conviction that they are capable of doing it.

John Kerry's Mideast dream world
Imagine a world in which the Mideast is not descending into chaos but is on the brink of a monumental series of breakthroughs. This is the magical world of the U.S. secretary of state.
