Emperor Hirohito notified about Hiroshima A-bomb half day after
Emperor Hirohito received his first report on the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima from the Imperial Japanese Army about half a day after the blast on Aug. 6, 1945, the official record of his reign showed Tuesday.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko on Friday visited a cenotaph and museum in Naha, Okinawa, commemorating the 1,482 people who died when an American submarine torpedoed a Japanese passenger ship during World War II. Half the victims were school children.

Prince Katsura, a cousin of Emperor Akihito and sixth in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne, died at a Tokyo hospital at 10:55 a.m. Sunday, the Imperial Household Agency announced. He was 66.
