The opening round of the revival of the Prizefighter boxing tournament will take place next month, with a prize of $1 million (¥156 million) hanging in the balance, organizers said Monday.
Eight fighters will get their first chance to punch their way to a big payday when the four quarterfinal matches take place at Yamato Arena in Osaka on July 15. The date and location for the semifinal and final rounds will be announced later. The competitors will all fight at the middleweight (72.5 kg or under) class.
The winners in the opening round will each receive $150,000. The prize for victory increases to $250,000 in the semifinals and $600,000 in the finals. Each round also features a bonus that fighters can claim by winning via knockout.
