The fans who filled a restaurant overlooking Saitama Stadium on Friday to cheer on Nadeshiko Japan in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinals left feeling frustrated, but also proud of the team’s performance.
Despite the loss to world No. 3 Sweden, Nadeshiko fans applauded as the final whistle blew, sighing with expressions like “daijoubu” (“it’s okay”) and “kuyashi” (“disappointing”) while commending the team for a strong effort.
“Ultimately they scored a goal, but it was really frustrating that they lost,” said 11-year-old Karen Kawada, who sported a pink jersey and an ear-length haircut, much like many of Japan’s players.
