Newly minted ozeki Hoshoryu was the big winner of the 2023 Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.
Though seemingly behind Daieisho and Wakamotoharu in the promotion race as the July meet got underway, Hoshoryu not only leapfrogged both men, but put in an outstanding 15-day shift that culminated in a career-first Emperor’s Cup and elevation to the sport’s second-highest rank.
The Mongolian appears to have taken his sumo to a new level, and positioned himself to dominate the limelight over the next half-decade.
