Teenager Naomi Osaka was named 2016 WTA Newcomer of the Year on Friday.

The 19-year-old Osaka, the first Japanese winner of the award, has enjoyed a breakthrough year on the tour this season, rising to a career-high ranking of No. 40 after finishing 2015 ranked 203rd.

Osaka made an impact at Grand Slam level, reaching the third round in all three of the major tournaments she played in — the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open.

She also reached the final of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo last month before losing to Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki.
