Heavyweight Hisayoshi Harasawa captured his first National Weight Category Championships title in the over 100-kg division on Saturday.

Last year's all-Japan national champion Harasawa defeated Ryu Shichinohe on points in the final at Fukuoka Kokusai Center on the first day of the meet that serves as the final qualifier for this summer's Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

In the 90-kg class, Daiki Nishiyama beat Mashu Baker and Aaron Wolf won the 100-kg division, with both Nishiyama and Wolf claiming their maiden titles.

On the women's side, London Olympian Haruka Tachimoto claimed the 70-kg title for the second year in a row, while Kanae Yamabe won the over 78-kg crown for the first time in two years. Megumi Tachimoto, last year's world silver medalist, lost in the over 78-kg semifinals.

Mami Umeki, the 2015 world champion, tasted defeat in the semifinals of the 78-kg division, with Ruika Sato winning the title for the third time. Aimi Nouchi won her first title in the 63-kg class.
