FC Tokyo striker Yoshinori Muto is a signature and medical away from joining the Bundesliga's Mainz on a four-year contract, Kicker reported on Thursday.

According to the German magazine, the fee has been set at €3 million ($3.3 million) for the 22-year-old Japan international, who had also received an offer from Premier League champion Chelsea.

Kicker said Mainz's head of player development, Christian Heidel, was in Japan three weeks ago to meet Muto, who is third in the J. League in scoring with eight goals in 12 games.

On Wednesday, Muto scored both goals in Tokyo's 2-1 home win over Ventforet Kofu in the Nabisco Cup.
