The dominance of the X League champion in the Rice Bowl extended for another year, as the Fujitsu Frontiers defeated the Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters 33-24 for the overall national championship on Saturday at Tokyo Dome.
The Frontiers captured their first Rice Bowl title while the Fighters lost for the fourth straight season. Now the X League representatives have beaten the collegiate champions sixth consecutive years and 10 times out of the last 11 years.
The Frontiers had to play without two key American players — quarterback Colby Cameron and defensive lineman Austin Flynn. Cameron, who threw 22 touchdown passes this season, his first with the Frontiers, hurt his right shoulder during the X League championship game against the IBM BigBlue last month and Flynn was sidelined because of a back injury.
