The Japan Football Association announced Wednesday that the Samurai Blue will take the field in September against Uruguay, in their first game since the recently completed World Cup.
The game, set for Sept. 5 at Sapporo Dome, will be Japan's first under new management following the resignation of Italian Alberto Zaccheroni. Under Zaccheroni, Japan exited at the group stage of the World Cup, having earned one point from three matches.
Japan played Uruguay in August 2013 and lost 4-2. Uruguay, which reached the last 16 in this year's World Cup finals in Brazil, is ranked sixth in the world and leads the series between the two nations 3-1 with one draw. Japan is ranked 45th.
The JFA also announced that Japan will take on Venezuela four days later at Yokohama's Nissan Stadium.
