Thomas Wisman, a former Japan national team men's coach, was named Link Tochigi Brex's head coach for the 2014-15 season, the NBL club announced on Thursday.
The 65-year-old American guided the Brex to a JBL championship during the 2008-09 season. He also coached the Japan national team from 2009-11. From 2011-13, he was Qatar's men's national team bench boss.
The Brex's goal is to win a championship next season, Wisman said, according to a team-issued statement.
Wisman's long basketball coaching career began in 1973 at Crystal Palace in England and has included stops in Kuwait, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea and the WJBL's JOMO club. He led the JBL's Isuzu squad during two stints, 1988-89 and 1997-2002.
Under Lithuanian coach Antanas Sireika, the Brex went 31-23 in the NBL's inaugural season. In 2012-13, Sireika's first season in charge, the Brex went 13-29 to close out the JBL era.
Ryuzo Anzai and Norio Sassa were retained as assistant coaches. Both completed their first season in that role under Sireika in April.
