The 2015 NHL Winter Classic will likely be held at Nationals Park in Washington, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
Since the Capitals were named the hosts of the 2015 marquee outdoor game back in September, speculation over a venue — and whether the contest would take place within the District of Columbia itself — has been rampant given the number of stadium options in the region.
No formal decision has been made and an announcement isn't expected in the immediate future, the source said, but Nationals Park is the likely site after recent visits by NHL representatives to the ballpark, RFK Stadium and FedEx Field. An opponent remains to be determined for the contest as well.
Of all the possible venues in the region, Nationals Park is both the newest stadium, having opened in 2008, and the most updated option in Washington. where 52-year-old RFK Stadium also resides.
