Former Japan midfielder Daisuke Matsui has joined Bulgarian first-division club Slavia Sofia, the club said Tuesday on its official website.

The 31-year-old Matsui, who helped Japan reach the second round of the World Cup on foreign soil for the first time at the 2010 finals in South Africa, joins Sofia on a deal running through June next year.

Matsui was with French club Dijon last season but was given limited playing time, due in part to injuries, making just three league appearances. Dijon was relegated and Matsui had been looking to move clubs.

Capped 31 times by his country, he has previously also played for Kyoto Sanga, Le Mans, Saint-Etienne, Grenoble and Tom Tomsk.
