Kumi Yokoyama got things started in the 20th minute with a superb left strike to put Japan ahead 1-0, but Jenna Richardson equalized after the break at Azuma Sports Park in Fukushima Prefecture. The hosts went 2-1 up near the end of the second half, only for Canada to draw even again on a goal by Adriana Leon.

"That was the perfect course for me (on the opening goal)," said Yokoyama. "It would've been great if we won, but there's a lot we need to work on."

The U-20 Women's World Cup, featuring 16 teams in four groups, will be hosted by Japan starting Aug. 19.
