FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Saturday he has sent a letter of condolence to the Japan Football Association to mark the first anniversary of the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan.

"On this day we solemnly remember the events of 11 March 2011 when your country was struck by the East Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster," Blatter wrote. "We also remember all those who lost their lives and express our sympathy with the pain and suffering of all the victims of this tragedy."

FIFA, soccer's world-governing body, donated $6.4 million to the JFA for reconstruction efforts in areas hit by the disaster. The monies were used for a variety of projects, including the restoration and expansion of Matsushima Football Center in Miyagi Prefecture.
