Japan forward Mike Havenaar made his first start in Europe, setting up the winner in Vitesse Arnhem's 1-0 home win over NAC Breda on Saturday.

Havenaar created the only goal of the match in the 19th minute, feeding midfielder Nicky Hofs in the area to hit past goalkeeper Jelle ten Rouwelaar for the victory.

"I can only get better from here on," Havenaar said. "Once my teammates and I figure each other out, I'll start to fit more into the team."

In the second half, Havenaar won a penalty that his teammate failed to convert, latching on to a cross from Japan defender Michihiro Yasuda before he was hauled down.

Havenaar called it an evening after 81 minutes as Vitesse improved to seventh place on 32 points for the season.

"It means a lot that I started and played more than 80 minutes," he said.
