The Hanshin front office announced Sunday it will part ways with manager Akinobu Mayumi after the Tigers failed to reach the playoffs.

"The manager told me he intended to take responsibility and resign at the end of this season if we did not make the postseason," said Hanshin president Nobuo Minami. "That is what has happened."

The Yomiuri Giants routed the Chunichi Dragons 12-4 on Sunday to clinch the third and last playoff spot.

Hanshin did not try to persuade Mayumi, who is in his third year as manager and has a year remaining on his current two-year contract, to stay with the Central League club.

Mayumi will remain in charge for the remainder of Hanshin's regular season games, according to Minami.

Hanshin said earlier this week that Mayumi would be released if the Tigers fail to reach the Climax Series and finished the regular season below .500.
