Ichiro Suzuki hit his second home run of the season leading off the first inning as the Seattle Mariners edged the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Saturday.

Suzuki went deep to right field off Josh Beckett for a 1-0 lead before the Mariners went on to score four more runs in the first on a two-run single by Mike Carp and a two-run homer from Casper Wells.

Suzuki grounded into a double play in his next at-bat and later struck out twice to finish 1-for-4 at Safeco Field.

Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia each hit two-run homers in the sixth off Felix Hernandez to pull the Red Sox within one, but Jamey Wright and Brandon League protected the lead.

Elsewhere, Texas reliever Koji Uehara retired both of the only two batters he faced in the seventh inning as the AL West-leading Rangers routed the Oakland Athletics 7-1.

A's designated hitter Hideki Matsui went 0-for-3.

Cleveland Indians outfielder Kosuke Fukudome had two singles in three at-bats in a 3-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.
