Oakland Athletics designed hitter Hideki Matsui was named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Major League Baseball announced Monday.

The weekly award is Matsui's fourth of his major league career following ones in 2003, 2004 and 2005, all with the New York Yankees.

Matsui led the majors with a .571 batting average and finished 12-for-21 with two home runs and seven RBIs over five games to cap off his milestone week.

The 37-year-old hit his 500th professional home run last Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers and followed with his 501st on Saturday against his former club. He finished 7-for-13 with two RBIs in Oakland's three-game series at Yankee Stadium, including a 5-for-5 performance on Sunday.
