Japan captain Makoto Hasebe has signed a two-year contract extension with Wolfsburg, the Bundesliga club announced on Thursday.

The deal will keep the 27-year-old Hasebe at Wolfsburg until June 2014. Hasebe has been with the team since 2008, when he joined from the J. League's Urawa Reds.

"I love my teammates, the fans and the town," Hasebe said through a statement. "I'm happy I'll continue to play here and I hope we can recapture the glory."

Hasebe won the Bundesliga title with Wolfsburg during the 2008-09 season under coach Felix Magath, who returned to the club midway through last season.

"We're very delighted Makoto has decided to remain with the club to keep playing for us," Magath said. "He has become a crucial player for the team, with his technique and running."
