Daisuke Matsuzaka admitted Sunday he was shocked to learn he would have to undergo season-ending arm surgery but hoped it would not mean an end to his career with the Boston Red Sox.

Renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum is scheduled to perform Tommy John ligament-transplant surgery on his right elbow in Southern California, with the date yet to be finalized.

"I was told that the ligament was torn and that for the elbow to fully heal, an operation was the only option," Matsuzaka told a news conference.
