Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Wednesday the team does not expect Daisuke Matsuzaka to undergo an operation on his right elbow.

Matsuzaka received a second opinion on the elbow in Southern California on Tuesday from specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum, who did not provide a different diagnosis of Matsuzaka than Red Sox medical director Dr. Tom Gill.

"Diagnostically, everything is kind of the same," Francona said. "We have to figure how to best go about this. The player or pitcher has to have some opinion, too. But I think you're always going to go about it non-operatively, first. That just seems like it makes sense to me."

Matsuzaka is on the disabled list for the sixth time in five major league seasons with ligament damage in his throwing elbow.
