DOHA (Kyodo) Japan's defense is taking a beating ahead of its fast-approaching Asian Cup opener against Jordan as Tomoaki Makino limped off the pitch during training on Thursday.

Makino, who only recently transferred to Cologne, of the Bundesliga, from Sanfrecce Hiroshima, sprained both ankles in another closed workout at Al Ahli Stadium to become questionable for Sunday's match against Jordan.

Prior to training, Japan Football Association technical director Hiromi Hara said defenders Gotoku Sakai and Daiki Iwamasa are also doubtful for the Jordan game.
