Nippon Professional Baseball commissioner Ryozo Kato and his major league counterpart Bud Selig confirmed Monday that a working group will be established to materialize a championship between the Japan Series and World Series winners.

The two commissioners held talks at Angel Stadium, the venue of Tuesday's All-Star Game.

"There are many issues to be resolved, but I and Mr. Selig agreed to work together on the proposed championship," Kato said.

They first discussed the championship when Kato visited Selig in Milwaukee in January.

A regional club championship has been staged for Asia.

The Asia Series was held between Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan between 2005 and 2008. Last year, only the Japanese and South Korean champions faced each other.
