KAWASAKI — Running back Yuichi Kon rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Fujitsu Frontiers to a 20-17 victory over the Kajima Deers on Sunday in the semifinals of the Pearl Bowl Tournament. The Frontiers take on the Obic Seagulls, who defeated the Meiji Yasuda Pirates 62-7 in the other semifinal game on Sunday, in the final on July 1 at Tokyo Dome.
"Our defense has been improving the past couple seasons. We struggled a little early in the game, but didn't give up many points, which was good." Fujitsu head coach Satoshi Fujita said. "We haven't beat the Deers recently. I'm glad we won today."
Playing before a crowd of 2,364 at Kawasaki Stadium, the Frontiers got off to an early success when they scored a touchdown on Kon's 34-yard scoring run in their first offensive drive. The Frontiers, starting at their own 37-yard line, needed six rushing plays without throwing the ball for a 7-0 first-quarter lead.
