NEW YORK (Kyodo) Hisanori Takahashi is set to start the season in the major leagues after a series of strong outings for the New York Mets as a non-roster invitee during spring training.

Mets general manager Omar Minaya told Takahashi of his inclusion in the 25-man opening day roster after Saturday's game in Sarasota, Fla., his agent said.

Takahashi, who turned 35 on Friday, had a 2-0 record with one save and a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings over six spring training appearances, including one start.

"Just to make the majors isn't my ultimate goal. But for today, I'd like to celebrate," Takahashi said through his agent. "I'm ready to go out to Citi Field with a smile on April 5."
