Ichiro Suzuki had one hit in three at-bats in the Seattle Mariners' first spring training game on Wednesday.
Ichiro singled to left and later stole third in the fourth inning of an 8-7, 10-inning loss to the San Francisco Giants at Peoria.
The star outfielder grounded out against Tim Lincecum in his first at-bat. Ichiro left the game after five innings.
"The Cy Young Award winner — It's definitely the pitcher you don't want to face on the first day, right?" he jokingly said. "But that doesn't mean I got an uncomfortable feeling after that."
Ichiro is heading into his 10th year in the major leagues after becoming the first player to collect 200 hits in nine consecutive seasons.
Elsewhere, new Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Akinori Iwamura went 0-for-2 in a 6-3 loss to the New York Yankees.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Junichi Tazawa struck out two in one scoreless inning in a 6-1 win over Boston College.
