Japan's women successfully defended their East Asian Football Championship title after edging South Korea 2-1 on Saturday.

First-half goals from Shinobu Ono and Mami Yamaguchi put Japan up 2-0 before Yoo Young A pulled one back for the away side in the 75th minute on the final day of the women's East Asian championship.

Ono opened the scoring in the seventh minute after a solo dribble from the halfway line and Yamaguchi doubled the lead 10 minutes later at Ajinomoto Stadium.

Japan won all three matches of the four-team, round-robin tournament. South Korea finished in third place with three points.

Earlier Saturday, China trounced winless Taiwan 3-0 to place second with six points.
