The proposal by Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig to Nippon Pro Baseball Commissioner Ryozo Kato for a "True World Series" seemed to come out of the blue but is a most welcome idea and, as many would say, it is about time.
Hopefully, the Japanese side will follow up in a timely manner, and both MLB and NPB will work out details and make it happen. I am itching to know when the first series will be played, where it will take place, who will be the title sponsor and all the other particulars.
Former Chiba Lotte Marines manager Bobby Valentine has been one to suggest and promote the idea in recent years, and I asked him what he thought about Selig coming forth with the gesture to Kato on Jan. 6 in Milwaukee.
