NEW YORK (Kyodo) World Series MVP Hideki Matsui on Monday underwent tests in New York on the left knee he had surgery on to repair damaged cartilage last fall.

Matsui, who concluded the last year of a four-year, $52 million contract with the New York Yankees and became a free agent last month, had a two-hour session of MRI scans and other tests before leaving the hospital without speaking to waiting media.

He later said in a statement that he "could not make any comment (on the state of the knee) at this time," and that he would be starting training soon.
