World Series MVP Hideki Matsui received an award from the Japanese government Friday in New York for fostering goodwill and friendship between Japan and the United States.

New York Consul General Shinichi Nishimiya presented the New York Yankees designated hitter with a certificate of commendation at his official residence.

"Matsui is loved by citizens from both countries," Nishimiya said in a speech at the award ceremony. "He has given the Japanese citizens here big dreams and has fostered a mutual understanding between the United States and Japan."

The award recognizes individuals and organizations who have made remarkable contributions to improving bilateral and multilateral relations between Japan and other countries.

First awarded in 2000, it is given on a case-by-case basis. Matsui is the ninth individual or organization to receive the award from the New York consulate, according to a consulate spokesperson.

"If I can help the Japanese here in the United States just a little bit, that legacy will make me very happy," said Matsui.
