Japan defeated Taiwan 72-57 in the third-place playoff match at the FIBA Asia Women's Basketball Championship on Thursday to secure a place at next year's world championship in the Czech Republic.
Noriko Koiso poured in 21 points and Ai Mitani had 16 to help Japan claim victory in Chennai, India. China beat South Korea 91-71 in the final.
Japan advanced to the knockout round after placing third in the group phase. It moved into the third-place playoff after defeat to South Korea in the semifinals on Wednesday.
