Japan's men had to settle for runner-up spot after losing to South Korea 68-58 in the final of the East Asia Basketball Championship on Sunday.

China beat Taiwan 107-90 in the game to decide third place in the tournament held at Park Arena Komaki in Aichi Prefecture.

Kim Min Soo scored a team-high 16 points for South Korea and Oh Sek Eun and Joo Hee Jung added 13 apiece. Joji Takeuchi had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Japan.

The teams battled in a heavily contested match-up with South Korea taking a 38-37 lead at halftime. Japan came within 53-49 at the end of the third quarter before its opponent widened the gap for good in the fourth.

South Korea and Japan booked their spots in the Asia Championship, which acts as a qualifier for next year's world championship, being held in Tianjin, China in August.

The top three finishers at the 16-nation Asian Championship, including host China, will win berths to the world championship in Turkey next year.
