The Yomiuri Giants have invited former New York Mets infielder Edgardo Alfonzo to try out at next month's spring training camp in Miyazaki Prefecture, the Central League club said Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Venezuelan helped the Mets reach the 2000 World Series before going on to play for the San Francisco Giants, the Los Angeles Angels and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Alfonzo has a .284 career batting average with 146 home runs and 744 RBIs in 12 seasons in the major leagues. He played last year for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic independent league.

Alfonzo has been named to Venezuela's provisional roster for this spring's World Baseball Classic but said he will withdraw his candidacy.
