Japan has formally applied to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Japanese rugby officials said Tuesday they have sent a letter of intent to the International Rugby Board confirming bids for both the 2015 and 2019 tournaments.
"We are bidding to host the Rugby World Cup not just for Japan but for Asia," said Nobby Mashimo, Chairman of the Japan Rugby Football Union.
"Bringing the Rugby World Cup to Japan and Asia will unlock the potential of rugby as a truly global sport."
The host is expected to be announced on July 28, 2009, along with the 2019 host.
