NEW YORK (Kyodo) New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui might have left knee surgery before the season is over, with the team on the verge of missing the playoffs for the first time since 1993.

Matsui came off the disabled list on Aug. 19 and has tried to rehabilitate the knee without surgery with the aim of helping the Yankees reach the postseason.

"I've been told to have the surgery when our playoff hopes were dashed. The sooner, the better for my preparations for next season, I think," Matsui said.

Matsui has missed the last three games. He is hitting .293 with nine homers and 45 RBIs in 92 games this year.
