Chunichi Dragons veteran left-hander Masa Yamamoto and Yokohama BayStars outfielder Seichi Uchikawa won the Central League monthly MVP awards Tuesday for the top performing pitcher and position player, respectively, for the month of August.

Yamamoto, who went 4-1 including two complete games with a 1.80 ERA, won the accolade for the first time in nine years and matched a CL record in collecting his eighth MVP award.

The 43-year-old Yamamoto, who won his career 200th game on Aug. 4, became the oldest player in either league to win the award, surpassing former Hiroshima Carp pitcher Yutaka Ono who claimed the honor at 41 years, eight months. Uchikawa won his first award batting a league high .449 in August.

Meanwhile, the Pacific League chose Seibu Lions right-hander Takayuki Kishi for the award after he posted a 3-0 mark with a league-high 37 strikeouts and a 1.32 ERA.

Orix Buffaloes first baseman Alex Cabrera won the award for the fifth time in his career, batting .405 with 10 homers and 24 RBIs.
