LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) Mongolian yokouzuna Asashoryu won the overall title Sunday at a two-day exhibition meet held in Los Angeles among wrestlers in sumo's elite mukuuchi division.
Asashoryu, who dominated the first day of the meet, disposed of komusubi Kisenosato with an underarm throw in a playoff to claim the overall top honors at Memorial Sports Arena.
Kisenosato beat Mongolian yokozuna Hakuho with a frontal forceout in the day's final to set up the playoff. It was the first time in 27 years that a mini-tournament was held in Los Angeles.
