Less than a week after he got hammered during his season debut, the New York Yankees sent left-hander Kei Igawa back to the minors on Thursday.

Igawa, 28, played last Friday against the Detroit Tigers in his first start of the season in the majors but got roughed up for six runs and 11 hits in just three-plus innings of work.

"If I stay injury-free and keep getting results in the minors, then my chance will come," said Igawa after being informed of his demotion by New York manager Joe Girardi. "I just have to try and make my pitching more complete."

Igawa will start Friday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in Indianapolis.
