New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui will undergo surgery for a knee injury that has plagued him for much of the 2007 season, team officials said Thursday. Matsui will have endoscopic surgery during the offseason to have flaked and damaged cartilage removed from his right knee after receiving examinations and opinions from four different doctors in the past month or so. He notified the club of his intention to receive surgery on Thursday afternoon after Yankees team officials discussed the results of the tests he had and the doctors' diagnoses. Matsui, who has been struggling with knee pain since late June, saw the team doctor on Sept. 30 and visited two others in October. He also got the opinion of the Japanese doctor who was in charge when he injured his left knee in 1998 while playing for the Yomiuri Giants.
