Cleanup hitter Yasuyuki Saigo hit a grand slam and drove in five runs Tuesday as Toshiba beat JR East 7-5 at Tokyo Dome, winning its sixth Intercity Corporate Baseball Championship and first in eight years. Saigo homered to right with no outs and the bases loaded in the first inning and added an RBI infield single in a three-run fifth for the team that represented Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. JR East, representing Tokyo and making its first appearance in the final, scored four runs in the ninth on a solo homer by Toshihiro Nakao and a three-run shot by Takuya Igarashi. Toshiba right-hander Hideto Isomura was named the MVP of the tournament after picking up his third win with 8 1/3 strong innings.
