Hanshin, trailing 7-2 in the top of the ninth, cut the deficit to two runs after starting the inning with four consecutive hits and a fielding error by shortstop Masato Watanabe in interleague play at Chiba Marine Stadium.

Hanshin then tied the score when Norihiro Akahoshi followed Keisuke Kano's pinch-hit RBI single with a run-scoring double before Kanemoto's second hit of the inning made it 9-7.
