Teikyo right fielder Shoki Sugiya hit a grand slam to cap a six-run first inning as the Tokyo school beat Koryo of Hiroshima Prefecture 7-1 to reach the semifinals of the National High School Invitational Tournament on Sunday.

Teikyo first got on the board on a one-out sacrifice fly by shortstop Kenshi Sugiya and first baseman Akira Nakamura followed with a solo homer before Shoki Sugiya homered to right with the bases loaded at Koshien Stadium. Teikyo left-hander Tatsuya Kakigahara threw a complete-game six-hitter.

Ace right-hander Atori Ota, who struck out 20 batters in a first-round game, did not play after being hit on the right thumb by a pitch in a game Thursday. In the day's other quarterfinal game, Ogaki Nichidai right-hander Takayuki Morita allowed just one run in a complete-game and helped his own cause with three RBIs, leading the tournament debutant from Gifu to a 9-1 rout of Okayama's Kanzei.
