Mongolian grand champion Asashoryu was dumped to a first-day shock defeat at the hands of countryman Tokitenku at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday.

Asashoryu appeared boggled from the start in the day's final bout and quickly found himself in a pickle when newly promoted komusubi Tokitenku grappled him from behind at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium.

The yokozuna searched for a way out of the jam, trying to spin around to face his opponent, but it was a lost cause as Tokitenku pushed him forward onto his knees.

"I can't believe I won but I'm happy," said Tokitenku. "I just tried to stay calm after I got him hemmed up."
