Seventh-ranked maegashira Futeno on Sunday pulled out of the Autumn Grand Sumo tournament on the final day of the meet because of a bruised left buttock.
Futeno sustained the injury in his win over Yoshikaze on Saturday but is expected to only need 10 days to make a full recovery.
The 26-year-old Futeno, who has a 9-5 record at the 15-day basho at Ryogokuu Kokugikan, forfeited Sunday's scheduled bout against komusubi Kisenosato.
"I don't want to make the injury any worse than it is so I will sit out and try and get ready for the next tournament," said Futeno.
