Hanshin took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back homers from Toritani and Akihiro Yano and made it 5-0 when Sugiyama hit a bases-loaded two-run single off Takumi Nasuno (3-7) in the fourth in the Central League game at Yokohama Stadium.

Yokohama pulled within two runs after an RBI triple by Shuichi Murata and a sacrifice fly by Masaaki Koike in the bottom of the fourth and a seventh-inning solo shot by Takuro Ishii, but the rally ended there.
